What you need to know

Soporific / Propofol

A short-acting soporific (Propofol) will be given to you during the endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy). This means you won't feel the examination and will be awake again immediately afterwards. This is NOT a narcotic. You will be monitored and receive nasal oxygen during the examination and the wake-up time. For legal reasons and for your own safety, please note that your reduced awareness and ability to react means that you may not drive or operate machinery for at least 12 hours after the treatment; you will also not be able to provide a signature during this time.

Before the examination, please consider if you wish to bring someone who can take you back home afterwards. We estimate the waiting time during your examination to be 90 minutes. Parking spaces are available in the nearby car parks (Drachen and Anfos).

If you wish we will happily organise a taxi for you. Naturally, you may also stay awake during the endoscopy if you choose.

CO2

The cleaned gastrointestinal tract folds in on itself. The endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) therefore requires an injection (insufflation) of air to be able to assess the mucosal lining. We use the Swiss standard insufflation of CO2. This is rapidly reabsorbed by the body and prevents abdominal pains after the examination, it can also frequently reduce the amount of soporific required.

Argon beamer (APC)

This is a method used effectively during endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy) to stop bleeding e.g. for angiodysplasias or bleeding tumours.
